چکیده

Memetic Algorithms have proven to be potent optimization frameworks which are capable of handling a wide range of problems. Stemming from the long-standing understating in the optimization community that no single algorithm can effectively accomplish global optimization [940], memetic algorithms combine global and local search components to balance exploration and exploitation [368, 765]: the global search explores the function landscape while the local search refines solutions. In literature the terms memetic algorithms [615, 673] and hybrid algorithms [325] refer to the same global–local framework just described. The merits of memetic algorithms have been demonstrated in numerous publications, [374, 375, 686, 688]. However, while optimization algorithms are often conceived and tested on synthetic mathematical problems, real-world applications can be significantly different. One such major difference is that real-world problems often induce uncertainty in the optimization problem and studies identify four common scenarios [425]:

Guest editorial: Memetic Computing in the presence of uncertainties

The complexity of fitness landscapes, e.g., in terms of multimodalities and presence of plateaus, typical of many realworld optimization problems coupled with the limitations imposed by the No Free Lunch Theorem, are strong mitigating factors for domain-specific Memetic Computing approaches. More specifically, since the No Free Lunch Theorem proves that the performance of each algorithm over al...

Genetic and Memetic Algorithms for Sequencing a New JIT Mixed-Model Assembly Line

This paper presents a new mathematical programming model for the bi-criteria mixed-model assembly line balancing problem in a just-in-time (JIT) production system. There is a set of criteria to judge sequences of the product mix in terms of the effective utilization of the system. The primary goal of this model is to minimize the setup cost and the stoppage assembly line cost, simultaneously. B...

Guest Editorial : Thematic Issue on “ Memetic Computing in the Presence of Uncertainties ”

The complexity of the fitness landscapes, e.g., in terms of multi-modalities and presence of plateaus, resulting from real-world optimization problems, from one hand, and the limitations imposed by the No Free Lunch Theorem, from the other hand, suggested the diffusion of domain specific Memetic Computing approaches. More specifically, since the No Free Lunch Theorem proves that the performance...

SOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM

In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...

A Memetic Algorithm for Hybrid Flowshops with Flexible Machine Availability Constraints

This paper considers the problem of scheduling hybrid flowshops with machine availability constraints (MAC) to minimize makespan. The paper deals with a specific case of MAC caused by preventive maintenance (PM) operations. Contrary to previous papers considering fixed or/and conservative policies, we explore a case in which PM activities might be postponed or expedited while necessary. Regardi...
